In the 18th century fashionable members
of London society flocked to Hampstead to take the therapeutic spa water. The source of the spring water, rich in iron
salts, was in Well Walk. The spa water was put in flasks to be sold to visitors or sent on to London. The Wells tavern,
almost directly opposite the well, accommodated those people who took part in the illicit liaisons for which the spa soon
became notorious. This Chalybeate (meaning a spring with a high iron content) Well is located a short stroll from Flask
Walk.
The title of this model is appropriate to indicate the thanks and appreciation for the very fine work over the years
provided by Patrick Gates. His artistic skills defined the unique JP Editions collection.
The plaque on the actual well reads:
"To the memory of the Honorable Susanna Noel who with her son Baptist, 3rd Earl of Gainsborough, gave this well together
with 6 acres of land to the use and benefit of the poor of Hampstead 20th Dec 1698"
Drink traveler with strength renewed. Let a kind thought be given To her who has thy thirst subdued. Then render thanks
to heaven.
