The
Lion Tower formed a vital part of the Tower of London's western
entrance put up by Edward I as part of the massive programme
of refortification carried out between 1275 and 1285. Highly
significant as a pioneering piece of military architecture,
by the 1330s is had taken on an additional function (which
was later to give its name) as the home of the Tower's Menagerie,
a collection of wild beasts. Although structurally much altered,
the Lion Tower and its immediate surroundings continued to
house the Menagerie and its Keepers until the dispersal of
the collection and its demolition in the 19th century. ... |
