The area now known as Cambridge grew up by the River Cam where the Romans built a fort to defend the point where their road from the garrison town of Colchester to Lincoln crossed. In the 8th century, the Saxons, who had settled the area, called the town "Grantacaestir" meaning a fort on the Granta (the name of the river before it was changed to "Cam"). In 875 the Anglo Saxon Chronicle calls the town "Grantabrycge"-one of the earliest known uses of the word bridge in the English language...
