Situated
next to the Lord Leycester Hospital, Anchor Inn proved a popular
place for many of the towns' inhabitants. It was also "ground
zero" for the Great Fire of Warwick.
On September 5, 1694 a young man (who has never been identified)
left the Anchor Inn with a burning stake lit from one of
the taverns' hearths, and crossed the street intending to
light a fire in a cottage. A southwesterly wind blew sparks
from the lit stake into tinder-dry thatched roofing and
began to smolder. The Great Fire had begun...
